While I was in Florida, fulfilling the requirements for a residency at the Safety Harbor Arts & Music Center, I spent some time working on a funny new composition called “Bowled Over.” it’s a piece for multiple percussionists using interconnected steel bowls. Here’s a rehearsal video with Sean Hamilton. We’re trying some things out.

Bowled Over is built on the idea of pairs of steel bowls, connected by vinyl piping and filled with liquid. As the bowls are raised to different heights, the liquid amount changes, causing one bowl to go up in pitch, while the other goes down.

The bowls are sounded by striking them with a variety of actuators.

it was really fun getting some work done on this piece, which I’ve been thinking about for several years!
