I was commissioned by the Lifecycle Building Center, a nonprofit recycling center in atlanta,to compose and perform a piece using building materials in their warehouse. The performance occurred on June 16, 2016 at the Ponce City Market, as part of their silent auction & fundraiser.
I decided to write a piece for a kitchen sink, the ultimate joke/challenge for a percussionist. And I cheated and added a looper and some vocals.
The sink is housed in a repurposed shipping container for some instruments I sent to California for a Shakespeare play. The pic tube in the picture is inserted into a 5 gallon water cooler container so I can fill & drain the left hand sink during performance. Photo by anne cox
Testing – this pic tube is inserted down into a water reservoir in the sink drain. When hit with sticks, the pitch gets lower with the height of the exposed tube. Photo by anne cox.
I attached some guitar strings to the sink & tuned them with screws & nuts. When bowed they resonate with the sink and with the attached springs. .Photo by anne cox.
